David Lazarus offers a lot of provocative facts in a couple pieces he wrote this week for the San Francisco Chronicle. First with Spin the (water) bottle
With $11 billion in U.S. sales and How water bottlers tap into all sorts of sources published today.
Most intriguing is why we pay more money for Enhanced Tap Water which is what a number of bottled water brands offer according to his research.
He also mentions the aborted launch of Dasani in the UK and a number of blind tastings where people found tap water to taste better.
Besides your Average Joe bottled water, there is also what I call Designer Water such as Voss which is perfect after shopping at Neiman.
I actually did a blind tasting of Tap Water (Bergen County, New Jersey) vs Voss vs Pelegrino. I do like Voss though. Maybe I am a bit of a water snob.
I have to say that tap water in Bergen County is of variable quality.
The number that really got my attention in David Lazarus second piece is: Bottled Water: $7.50 a Gallon…Gas Unleaded: $2.20…(average prices this week)
I remember telling my younger one this week that wars will be fought over water…This might prove my point.
The third piece in David Lazarus series will be published on Sunday.
