British newspaper, The Telegraph came up with an elegant answer to the City Guide question in their Travel section.
To illustrate their take on it, I chose Sarah Martyn’s Guide to Lisbon, the Portuguese Capital.
The Guide starts with a brief introduction on the place and its history.
Then you get the compulsory ‘Getting There’ info.
The first 3 sections offer 5 picks each for Top Sights, Top Hotels, Top Restaurants.
A short description for each is followed by name, address, phone number, opening hours and price.
When available, the location website is mentioned.
Next is an Out and About part covering Cafes, Bars, Nightlife and Shopping.
The very important Practical Information is not forgotten with details on Time Zone, Currency, Transportation and Insider Tips
Last is a Simple Map that allows you to locate where the 15 recommendations (sights, hotels, restaurants) are located.
To prevent the Lisbon City Guide from being too dry, great photos give you a feel of the local flavor.
This makes for an informative and quick read.
Everything might not fit your budget but at least you have a solid base of local details to start with.
Do not forget to leave room for surprises.
After all what is travel without adventure.
The Telegraph has Similar Guides for many other cities. Most recent was Rome,
I chose Lisbon since I plan on visiting the city in the coming year and just happen to be writing about Portuguese Table Wines tomorrow for Wine Blogging Wednesday.
