Really? Chemistry, Love and Chocolate!
"The effect of Chocolate is four times more powerful than a passionate kiss" suggests chocolatier Oliver Kita in a byline for his Saint Valentin Collection.
In Chocolate: Aphrodisiac or Euphamism? Michele Doughty of Bryn Mawr College mentions Phenylethylamin and Seratonin, 2 substances found in Chocolate as the possible source.
Her paper mentions that these substances "Both occur naturally in the human brain and are released by the brain
into the nervous system when we are happy and also when we are
experiencing feelings of love, passion and/or (dare I say it?) lust.
This causes a rapid mood change, a rise in blood pressure, increasing
the heart rate and inducing those feelings of well being, bordering on
euphoria usually associated with being in love" (source: Chocolate an Aphrodisiac by Janet Vine).
Matthew Short of Lick the Spoon (UK) suggested that it might be true except for everyone except for the exhausted chocolatiers like him trying to fill all orders on time.
Let me finish with a few good words from Mr Kita: “To arouse pleasure, chocolates must be jewel-like and filled with the perfume of cacao”
His 16 piece Valentine Signature illustrates this piece.
A vos amours!
