We are not talking here of those of us who find themselves napping at
work due to exhaustion. This can be caused by being burned out by
endless days or because you are juggling multiple jobs to say afloat.
An overly long commute can be a reason as well.
The topic at hand here is of being bored at work.
Hopefully it is not so bad that you tell yourself oh! no it’s only Monday, 5 days to go.
What causes some of us to feel that way?
Phyllis Korkki tries to find out in That Boring Job Should Sound an Alarm (Career Couch, NY Times).
It often shows a lack of stimulation in people’s tasks.
Things might become routine, repetitive and the motivation to do them slowly dies.
One aspect that I would not have considered is that ‘boredom is rage
spread thin’ (a quote attributed to Paul Tillich in the column).
Finding a new project you can get involved in might just do the trick.
There are many time wasting Bored at Work sites out there.
One that stands out for its imagination is Deeper Beige with some ‘silly and sensible’ stuff as its creator puts it. Rather than stay idle, he/she used the down time to come up with projects.
