You do not have to count Chinese as a subject you are learning to find things of interest on Learning Cantonese.
Launched about a month ago, Learning Cantonese tells us about Daisann McLane experience of relocating from Brooklyn to Hong Kong and choosing Cantonese over Mandarin and the intricacies of the language.
In Brushstrokes of Spring she shares the buzz of activity surrounding the Chinese New Year and the art of fai chuen to decorate the entrance of homes and share wishes such as "\luhng\ /mah/ \jing\ \sahn\
or Spirit of Dragon and Horse", "a greeting reserved for the elderly,
wishing them the energy and longevity of the horse and dragon" according to Chinese Lessons.
She contributes to National Geographic Traveler and also wrote the Cheap Hotels guide and recently (November 2007) Living in China with Angelika Taschen and Reto Guntli (Taschen Books, my illustration).
Her Dispatches from Hong Kong in Slate (2004) are worth a read.
Daisann was recently interviewed by World Hum.
