In London with some leisure time on your hands, the Victoria and Albert Museum treats us to The Art of Drinking covering 500 years of us fallible creatures trying to do just that without messy spills.
The show aims to show how "drinking has stimulated a rich material culture. Specific situations
and drinks require particular vessels, from stoneware beer mugs to jade
wine cups and silver goblets. This display explores the varied and
often curious designs of drinking vessels in order to explain their
function and importance" (their illustration, a puzzle Jug from 1770-75).
It also covers how "the history of drinking practices encompasses pleasure and pain, tradition and innovation".
There is a companion book with the same title.
No need to rush the exhibit is on until September of 2008 and it is Free.
My biggest challenge ever in this area was drinking ‘a la regalade’ while working in the vineyards.
