I have to pledge my ignorance.
Until I met Austin resident and
fellow writer Ellen, I did not have a clue about the existence, type,
style, taste of wines from Texas.
I did not taste any but was shown a full display of the stuff at the Whole Foods headquarters store (525 North Lamar at Six Street) where she took me on a quick tour.
No cheap plonk mind you.
One of them is retailing for around $40.
The local winemakers have not settled for just run of the mill grapes.
Following
the example set by the Rhone Rangers in California they experiment with
Viognier, Charbonneau and also dessert styles like Moscatel.
I plan on taking a tour of some of the vineyards on my next visit to Austin.
When? I don’t know.
A number of players can be found in Fredericksburg.
Around Austin from April 10 to April 13, the Texas Hill Country Wine and Food Festival (poster is my illustration) showcases local producers.
Music will also be on the menu with events such as Uncorked and Acoustic at Threadgill’s Home Cooking restaurant on opening night.
I would not mind being there.
