Tired of the corporate life, Rajeev Samant decided to leave Silicon Valley and return to his hometown of Nashik, India.
According
to Maharashtra days of wine and roses ( by Joe Leahy, FT), Rajeev was
inspired by no less than Russian literary giant Tolstoy, he decided to
spend some time working the land…
The seeds of his wine
venture were planted in his head by a girlfriend who wondered aloud why
there were no vineyards when he already had planted table grapes.
His creation, Sula Vineyards now produces some 250.000 cases per year.
They started with Sauvignon Blanc but now offer other varietals such as red zinfandel and also sparkling wines.
Joe Leahy does point out that the domestic producers are insulated from the worldwide competition as imports are subject to punitive tarifs. Another thing he highlights is the minuscule consumption equal to no more than 2 table spoons per person per year.
