Looking for inspiration, I paid a visit to a different wine store a couple of days ago.
Not only did I find a Spanish wine that I never tasted before but even better, this red blend was 50% Prieto Picudo and it was my first encounter with this grape.
Brought to us by producer Dehesa de Rubiales in Fuentes del Ropel-Zamora (Castilla y Leon), this Olaia (2004) besides Prieto Picudo is 45% Tempranillo and 5% Merlot.
Prieto Picudo is a "red
grape which produces very aromatic, distinctive wines, rather light in
colour but very pleasant. Plentiful in Zamora and León" according to Wines from Spain and is known for its black skin.
This varietal was planted by monks back in the 17th century states Olaia US importer Vin Iberian.
For once I agree with the earth and cocoa attributes.
Great if you are looking for a different kind of red, around $12
Robert Parker gave it an 89 in case you care.
Ryan of Catavino features Tinto Pajares, all Prieto Picudo it seems.
