Many cities celebrate Bike to Work Day 2008 on Friday, May 16.
Amongst them the Baltimore metropolitan area which uses the day to kick off their Clean Commute Month.
The reason behind it is that May is the beginning of the
ground-level ozone season, when we hear about Code Red and Orange Ozone
Action Days. On those days, the air is dangerous to breathe –
especially for the young and for the elderly. Single occupancy vehicles
produce 20% of the dangerous ozone-emission pollution in the Baltimore
area. Bike commuting can improve the air we breathe.
In Washington DC get a free ride with your bike on Metrorail and buses.
Waba (or Washington Area Bicyclist Association) highlights local events and suggests that new riders join ‘commuter convoys’ as "WABA volunteers will be leading "commuter convoys" from across the area
to downtown, DC. Each convoy leader is an experienced bicycle commuter
that can assist you with safe riding and equipment tips as well as the
best route to your destination. You do not need to register for a
convoy, simply show up at the designated time and location".
In the San Diego area, 40 Pit Stops are set where snacks and water will be available to bicyclists.
Free Trolley and Bus Rides are available on Bike to Work Day.
Ridelink gives details on the routes that take a bike and users guidelines.
Even the federal government promotes the event via Greenversations described as the ‘official blog of the U.S Environmental Protection Agency’ (which I did not know of until today)…
San Francisco and the Bay Area had their Bike to Work Day on May 15.
Denver waits until Wednesday, June 25th to celebrate.
Their banner is my illustration.
Feel free to send us photos of your local event.
