I just realized that even though Return to Terroir 2009 took place about 2 weeks ago (February 23), I had barely glimpsed at my notes and therefore not shared much with you.
Blame it on a bad cold that brought me to a crawl for a number of days.
My apologies
Now let's get started with Meinklang located in Burgenland (Austria), on the eastern part of Lake Neusiedl, near Hungary
They wear their certified biodynamic and demeter label with pride.
Looking for a fun cocktail wine, their Frizzante, a sparkling Rosé (Blanc de Noir= made with Pinot Noir) , they call it salmon colored) does the trick.
They note that "it gets ets its beautiful salmon color from a
short skin contact. A floral bouquet comes from a cold
vinification. It is well rounded with a slightly off dry
fruitiness, yet it has a crisp dry finish."
The Pinot Gris (2008) was bottled just 2 weeks prior to the show, was rich with great minerality.
Next was the Blaufränkisch (2007?), made with the indigenous Blaufränkisch varietal which Wine Library Terroir calls Central Europe Favorite Red Grape as it is also found in neighboring Hungary where it is known as "kekfrankos".
I tasted last the Konkret Sankt Laurent (2006?) which they age in Concrete Eggs (picture below, from Meinklang).
Meinklang is not just wine, it is an active farm run by the Michlits family with Werner being the winemaker.
They also raise cattle (augus beef) whose dung provides a natural fertilizer for the vinayards and pick delicious apples from their orchards.
Send me to Burgenland and Alto Adige please…
