Esther Bintliff takes a look at the effect of rising temperatures on French wines in France's cultural heritage withers on the vine (FT, Sept 5).
It seems especially worrisome for Rhone area and Mediterranean wines where she says under the heat of August grapes might just shrivel away as was the case she reports for Christine Vernay (pictured below, from their site) of Domaine Georges Vernay (Condrieu) during the long hot summer of 2003.
I was surprised to learn from the same piece that this year the harvest started late August in the Languedoc and even Beaujolais.
