If you
knew me better, you would have been surprised to see me breaking my red
wine bent for a slew of German whites at the Terry Theise Spring Tasting in New
York on January 19, 2010.
This wine event marked my first visit
to City
Winery which combines wine and music in one space.
Being
introduced to Hexamer handcrafted Rieslings, the labor of love
from a young talent was another first.
The winery is located in
the Upper Nahe area and those I tasted came from Meddersheimer
Rheingrafenberg, all from the 2008 vintage.
Mineral but not
one dimensional as centuries of nature's work have brought layer upon
layer of soil from slate to sandstone.
One you pick that from
is the Riesling 'Quarzit'.
The Monzinger
Fruhlingsplatzchen Riesling Spatlese displayed more fruit and
intensity.
All wines were elegant, with Hexamer wines the accent
is on Terroir rather than varietal.
