With the warm and sticky weather we have experienced in the New York area for the past 2 plus weeks, I would not mind trading my New Jersey digs for a spot in the south of France to meditate on winds of change and the Future of Work, yours, mine as seen by Lynda Gratton (London School of Economics) and others in the Hot Spots Movement.
In The winds of change are blowing towards the workplace (FT, July 26), she uses the effects of the Mediterranean summer breeze in her holiday home to illustrate her point.
The lull in wind patterns she describes has a similarity:
“It feels to me that in the world of work, a similar calm has descended.
We are in a state of in-between. In-between the economic meltdown and whatever comes after it. In-between the destruction of so many companies and whatever comes after them.”
The weather patterns in Southern France might be somehow predictable.
I have felt the winds of change for a while now.
Like many of us I am working at times in a muddied way through these changes.
There are a lot of opportunities out there, many with low returns (at least in financial terms). What we derive from our work and effort is some influence.
We constantly weave a web of contacts and ideas.
What will come out of it?
How do we make something out of Free?
The only things that are certain at this time are change, uncertainty and at some point opportunities.
