Auction house Sotheby's is not the first to come to mind when food, eating local and sustainibily is the culprit.
It might be the reason behind the counterintuitive choice of Sotheby's as the venue in New York for inaugural Tri-State Heirloom Vegetable auction, The Art of Farming, on September 23, 2010.
The event will raise funds for the GrowNYC New Farmer Development Project which 'identifies, educates, and supports immigrants with agricultural experience by helping them become local farmers and establish small farms in the region' and The Sylvia Center at Katchkie Farm 'a garden-to-table program that inspires young people to discover good nutrition. Children come to understand what food is, how it is grown, and, perhaps most important, that they themselves can choose to make good food for their own bodies.'
The Art of Farming auction is a prelude to the 2010 Eat Drink Local Week in New York.
