In a decade of existence, Cornerstone Cellars has built a well deserved reputation especially with its Cabernet Sauvignon.
Not everyone wants to spend over $50 on a bottle of wine though.
With that in mind, winemaker Jeff Keene and managing partner Craig Camp, created a second label. Stepping Stone, as a way to introduce their work to a broader clientele.
The 2011 releases are:
2010 Stepping Stone by Cornerstone Napa Valley Riesling
2010 Stepping Stone by Cornerstone Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc, Cuveé Musque
2010 Stepping Stone by Cornerstone Corallina Napa Valley Syrah Rosé
2008 Stepping Stone by Cornerstone Napa Valley Syrah
2008 Stepping Stone by Cornerstone Napa Valley Cabernet Franc
2008 Stepping Stone by Cornerstone Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
I had the opportunity to taste this line up (except for the Syrah). Price ranges from $16 to $35.
I will focus on my 2 favorites.
I was glad that their Sauvignon Blanc-Cuvée Musqué was more French than New Zealand in style. Elegant nose, palate teaser, good acidity. Let's say seafood. Should retail for around $15/$16.
In the reds, Cabernet Franc did it for me. Luscious, this full bodied red calls for tangy, creamy cheeses. red meat or maybe even a lightly spicy couscous dish. Growing under the California sun makes it richer than a Chinon. Retail price should be around $30.
In addition, with 2010 Vintage, Cornerstone Cellars launched a Stepping Stone Napa Valley Rocks White blend and a Stepping Stone Napa Valley Rocks Red lend.
For each blend, the winemaker will pick the best grapes of the vintage so style might differ year after year.
Thanks Craig for giving me a chance to taste your Stepping Stones, much appreciated.
