Thanks to my good friend David McDuff, I was reminded a day after it started that (excuse the long moniker) Center City District Restaurant Week kicked off in Philadelphia on Sunday, September 13 and runs until the 18, skips the 19 (not sure why) and resumes from September 20 to 25.
Those participating offer three-course- dinners for $35* per person. In addition, some of them also have a three-course
lunch for $20* (*does not include alcohol, tax or gratuity).
Being unruly, I will not mention any of the official participants but instead put the spotlight on Meme Restaurant which offers its Off-Broadway equivalent of this Philly's Restaurant Week.
Why do I compare it to Off-Broadway, well Mémé Restaurant does not qualify for the Center City District.
As David Katz, its chef-owner notes they are 2 blocks west from the area.
He decided to join the fun with his own $35 three course dinner.
What actually drew me to Mémé Restaurant was the French connection via his Moroccan Jewish heritage. How could I not like a guy who named his place after his grandma ('Mémé' in French) and the good taste of a Ralph Steadman logo.
He must love people and life and some of this love must transpire in his food.
The August Pre -Fixe $35 Dinner Menu keeps it simple with its choice of 5 starters, 4 main dishes and 4 desserts.
I would be happy with just the Veal Chop (below) and the Black Plum Tart with almond creme fraiche which might not be on the menu anymore but there is always another dessert to tempt you.
The place is human, only 42 seats and located at 22nd and Spruce Streets (Rittenhouse Square)…
On my must try, next time I visit the city of brotherly love.
