You don't have to get blinded by science, you can learn from it at places like the Science Cafe which feeds your brain in San Francisco.
They have it 'Down to a Science' as their site proclaims.
How it works (in their own words):
Translation: No lectures. No technical jargon. Just food, drinks, and science!
There is no admission to the event, the only requirement is an open mind and curiosity!
Down to Science is held at a local San Francisco cafe once per month. The format is simple: a short 10-20 minute talk followed by Q&A leading to a general dialogue."
Their most recent topics were stress oriented with their book club exploration of Why Zebra's Don't Get Ulcers (originally published in 1999, I believe) and on July 20th, they invited Philippe Goldin to discuss how Meditation can temper Social Anxiety, what the speaker calls in more technical terms 'Mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR)'.
Here is how Philippe Goldin explained it:
shift freely from one mode of thinking to another mode, then that is a
sign of health,” said Goldin. “It’s when we get stuck in certain
thinking patterns that our beliefs become maladaptive.”
Less heady topics such as food have their place on the agenda of the Science Cafe.
Looking for Sunday outings, on August 9, they plan A Day of Foraging in the Sun with Iso Rabins which we featured in Food Gone Wild, Hunters or rather Gatherers like Forage San Francisco (April 15). You will get to your destination aboard the Veggie Oil powered Transported SF bus.
As you might have noticed Down to a Science events (except for the field trips) are Free.
