I had not had the opportunity until this past week-end to taste the Can Blau 2007 Red Blend.
Before opening the bottle as always when it's new to me I checked front, side and labels for a little insight into what I could expect.
A question popped in my head as I saw the composition, Mazuelo (40%), Syrah (40%), Garnacha (20%): what is Mazuelo?
I did not know so I went looking.
What came out is that Mazuelo is another name for Carignan used mostly in the Rioja area.
Getting back to this Can Blau 2007, it comes from Monsant.
Each varietal comes from different vineyards and soils, sandy clay for the Mazuelo, chalky soil and the Garnacha on slate (or llicorella).
The combination brings distinct flavors to the blend, a deep red with rich ripe fruits on display.
A great buy under $15
