There is a first time for many things in life.
Sunday was my first time for Uruguayan wines.
I like to try new things, new flavors and since the wine was only around $10.00, I thought what the heck! Worse case scenario I would have used it as cooking wine.
Actually this Cisplatino (I bought the 2005) shows character and good tannins, I enjoyed it with full flavored cheeses. It will also pair well with grilled meats.
A blend of 60% Tannat and 40% Merlot, it is hand picked and estate bottled by the Pisano family in Progreso. The combination of calcareous land with the cool climate due to the vineyards location at the confluence of the Rio de la Plata and the Atlantic Ocean makes for a smooth ripening of the grapes.
As a second first, I never tasted wines made with Tannat. Actually, I might have tasted some if and when I drank Madiran wines from the South of France. According to Wine Geeks, Tannat was brought to Uruguay by Basque settlers.
The Madiran appellation is located on the Southern border of Armagnac.
The Pisano Wines have won Many Awards at International Tastings.
