Collecting starts in many ways. Passion for music was what got got Peter Golding started. Actually his first pick was ‘a discarded poster after a protest meeting in Hyde Park in 1967‘ according to Pop from the Easel by Anthony Thorncroft in today’s Financial Times.
His collection counts more than 2000 pieces many from the psychedelic era but also ‘early Beat scene’ in London and original Punk years.
The ‘Flying eyeball‘ poster painted by legendary Rick Griffin for a joint concert with Jimi Hendrix and John Mayall is estimated to be worth at least $100,000.
Peter Golding‘s treasure trove named Inspirational Times will be auctioned by Sotheby’s (poster for the auction illustrates this piece).
Peter Golding is more interested in having a museum as the buyer to keep the collection intact.
An alternative solution would be to split it in two parts, American artifacts on one side, British ones on the other.
Some 100 of these items will be displayed from May 24, 2007-September 16, 2007 at the Whitney Museum in New York as part of ‘Summer of Love: Art of the Psychedelic Era’ according to Anthony Thorncroft.
If you have around $5 million to spend, the collection could be yours. All you would have to do then is build the museum to host it, a piece of cake.
