For whatever reason when I started writing this morning, the album title ‘New Picnic Time’ by the famously underrated band Pere Ubu (named after the Alfred Jarry character in the play ‘Ubu Roi’) popped up.
So even though the theme for this Wine Blogging Wednesday #23 is Barbecue Wines, I name my piece ‘New Picnic Wine’. This topic was offered to us by Vivi’s Wine Journal.
After this long and typically french disgression, let me get to my choice of Barbecue-Picnic Wine. It was actually suggested to me by Sharon of ‘Amanti Vino’ (my favorite local wine store here in Montclair, New Jersey).
Coming from the floodplains of Langhorne Creek in Australia, the Killibinbin 2003 Blend is 60% Shiraz/ 40% Cabernet Sauvignon.
It is pretty high in alcohol content (15%) so sitting in the shade while sipping it might be a good idea. The wine balances dark fruit flavors with vanilla and pepper scents. Langhorne Creek is in South Australia, about an hour drive from Adelaide. According to the distributor’s fact sheet, Killibinbin means ‘to shine’ in the Aborigene language.
Being that the wine is from Australia and I am originally from France with most of my family living in Toulouse, I would personallly served it with Lamb Chops previously marinated with olive oil and Herbes de Provence and to add some spice to the festivities, Merguez Sausage.
I paid slightly over $20.00 for it but the wine can be found (here in the US) in the $16.00 to $26.00 range depending on the stores.
“New Picnic Wine” or BBQ Wine, I select Killibinbin Blend 03 for Wine Blogging Wednesday #23
