Sometimes I pick a wine for the Label, the Importer such as European Cellars for Spain and Southern France. This week a storyline caught my eye with an italian carpenter turned wine maker.
Gianfranco Alessandria (his site is in Italian) produces a Dolcetto d’Alba, a Barbera d’Alba and a bigger Barolo (made of Nebbiolo). All his wines are anchored and defined by the ‘terroir’ of Monforte d’Alba where they come from.
I bought his 2005 Dolcetto D’alba which can be best defined by its subtlety. It does not grab your attention but rather grows on you as you sip it.
The 2004 vintage (whose label graces this post) was featured in Everyday Red Owns the Middle Ground by Eric Asimov (November 1st, New York Times).
At about $14.00, call it a very good value indeed.
Read my Halloween and Wine and Witches and Wizards pieces for wines whose labels attracted me.
