A visit to Chocolate & Zucchini this morning reminded me of the existence of a nice French tradition, La Galette des Rois. According to AskOxford it goes back to the middle ages.
La Galette des Rois which could be translated into the King’s Cake contains a Feve now made of plastic. The same ‘AskOxford‘ tells us that in ancient times the Feve was a bean chosen as a symbol of fertility. The Galette des Rois is purchased at the local Pastry Shop or Bakery
to celebrate the Epiphany, usually on January 6th.
Whoever bites La Feve while eating their piece of the cake is King for a Day (to paraphrase XTC) and gets to pick their queen.
Maybe I will remember to celebrate this holiday next year, it is always a fun thing to do.
If you feel like baking, I found a Galette des Rois Recipe posted by the French Embassy.
Their photo illustrates this post.
Is there anywhere in northern NJ where you can actually buy a galette des rois??
