It is a rare pleasure when you find a good wine at a great price. I do not buy Bordeaux very often but after tasting Abbaye de St Ferme ‘Les Vignes du Soir’ (2003) at a local store, I was so pleasantly surprised that I bought 2 bottles.
This Bordeaux Superieur is a blend of 70% merlot, 25% cabernet sauvignon and 5% cabernet franc. Les Vignes du Soir has a ruby red color, good legs and a spicy (peppery) finish.
Les Vignes du Soir could be loosely translated to ‘the evening vines’.
Arnaud de Raignac of the Chateau de l’Abbaye de Saint Ferme wants to keep his wines honest by practicing sustainable methods and not bending to the whims of consultants and taste makers of the hour.
I might have to go back and buy a whole case.
For travelers, let me share a few facts. Saint Ferme is a small town of around 300 habitants located on the Dropt river. Its main attraction is the Benedictine Abbey. Pilgrims on their way to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle used to stop there.
Jerry Shriver of USA Today gave high marks to the 2002 vintage in Devoutly Bordelaise.
