While visiting the WNYC website earlier, I noticed that Soundcheck is holding a Retirement Party today. I wondered what it had to do with Angelique Kidjo (new album ‘Djin Djin’ pictured here) then realized that it was about the AARP wanting to ‘market’ music to those of us over 50.
‘Risk of shingles with chickenpox’ is the AD that greeted me when I landed on the AARP Music Page. Front page artists were Ray Charles and Tony Bennett, nothing wrong with them mind you.
Well, like the people pictured in the ‘chickenpox ad’, they are part of the AARP demographics but on the older end of it.
What about people between 50 and 60 for example? They are more likely to go for Bob Marley, Joni Mitchell, Brian Eno, Laurie Anderson, The Pretenders, Madness, Elvis Costello, REM, Weather Report, U2, The Cure, New Order, Peter Gabriel and I could keep going…
Did not see any mention of the recent Sly and the Family Stone reissues either…
I do see that they list Bjork, The White Stripes and Arcade Fire performing at Austin City Limits.
Maybe opening their site to comments would allow them to change the mix and realize that many of us over 50 are too young to die and not too old to rock’n’ roll…
A little musically tinged Tuesday morning rant…
For more invigorating music visit I Jamming by Tony Fletcher or relative newcomer Amie Street for discoveries.
By the way the Angelique Kidjo’s new release has a duo with Peter Gabriel on it, a nice slow tempo song titled ‘Salala’.
Angelique Kidjo will actually perform Live today at the Virgin Store on Union Square in New York at 6:00 pm today if you are in the neighborhood.
Have a musically blessed day.
