One of the most important string of holidays was in full swing last week in Japan with Golden Week.
The last of these holidays (on May 5th) was Kodomo no hi (Chidren’s Day).
In Flying Fish: Fun Stuff for Japanese Children’s Day, Ryoko and Chiemi of PingMag tell us about the origins of the Koinobori, carp like flying ‘fishes’ that can be seen everywhere on balconies on Children’s Day.
They can be purchased along sweets in stores and supermarkets.
PingMag traces the origins of these ‘fish flags’ back to the EDO period but also attributes a Chinese influence to it.
The Seaside Koinoboris photo was taken by Noe of Yokohama, Japan.
