Not to be their mouthpiece but I have to mention New Bamboo: Contemporary Japanese Masters, a sculpture show opening on Saturday, October 4 at the Japan Society in New York.
93 sculptures by 23 artists using bamboo as their main medium will be displayed.
They run the gamut from geometrical figures to human expression such as the ‘Faces’ below made of Bamboo, lacquer, and powdered polishing stone and clay by Nagakura Ken’ichi (b. 1952), from Anne and Arnold Porath Collection (Photo: Susan Einstein).
On his Textile Arts profile Nagakura Kenichi tells us "For me it is very important to use parts of a bamboo plant from above ground and parts from below ground. I like to add bamboo roots to some of my work as a reminder of the dark side of life."
The show runs from October 4th to January 11, 2009.
