The streets of New York City might be slower and quieter on Sunday, January 11 if we get the winter storm that the weather man predicts.
If you step into Webster Hall at 6pm that same day, it will be a different story.
12 Bands will share 3 stages in 1 Night for Global Fest 2009.
A sizable French Contingent will be there including les Marseillais Watcha Clan and their latest project Diaspora Hi-Fi which they call a Mediterranean caravan.
They remind me of Natacha Atlas maybe because of their gyrating singer.
More rooted in tradition is Shanbehzadeh Ensemble which shows that bagpipes are not restricted to the Celtic world.
As I learned from the program notes of the 15th William Kennedy Piping Festival:
and dance of the Persian Gulf, more specifically of the province of
Boushehr, a little known region in the south of Iran. The main
instruments they play include the Neyanbânn (Iranian bagpipes), the
Neydjofti (a double flute), the Dammâm (two-sided drum), the Zarbetempo
(percussion), the traditional flute, the Senj (a sort of cymbal) and
the Boogh (a goat's horn)."
The final line includes Calypso
Rose, Chicha Libre, Hot 8 Brass Band, Kailash Kher’s Kailasa, L&O,
La Troba Kung-fú, Marcio Local, Occidental Brothers Dance Band
International, Shanbehzadeh Ensemble, Tanya Tagaq, Watcha Clan and Brooklyn Qawwali Party which replaced Femi Kuti who could not make it to the event.
Tickets are $40 per person
