Nowhere to garden near your urban digs.
You might want to think again.
Look up on the roof and realize that your building is on its way to create a green oasis.
It won't be an overnight proposal as you have to first consider the fact that the structure must be strong enough to carry the added weight of soil, plants and I guess some water.
One it has passed the test and the garden is built, building will have gained a layer of insulation with its green carpet, put rainwater to good use, added to the oxygen stock of the neighborhood.
I will not create if not an oasis of peace as the sound of traffic and the general hustle and bustle of the city will not disappear, yet residents will have gained a communal space.
Is there room for edible gardens up there, I'm not sure.
Interested in the concept, you can learn more about the practicalities at GrowWest 2010, a one day Green Roofs for the West symposium in Denver, Colorado.
It takes place at Denver Botanic Gardens on June 17, from 8 AM to 5 PM.
Cost: $125 per person, $30 for students.
