European Heritage Days or Journées européennes du patrimoine in French was launched in 1991 by the European Council.
Around 40 countries and entities from Albania to the Holy See (Vatican) to Ukraine participate in this yearly event that draws up to 11 million visitors.

France chose the 3rd week-end of September for its Journees du Patrimoine (English site).
Amongst the French cities participating is Arles, rich with Roman artifacts.
The Patrimoine de la Ville d'Arles site (French only) traces its historical figures all the way back to 100 BC starting with Auguste.
History and heritage are celebrated through open houses, art exhibits, music and many other ways.
