Last week in Drink that Pecorino, I went over a few whites I found to my linking at Vinitaly Day in New York.
There were reds too.
Let me start with one not mentioned in my headline.
From our hosts Lidia Bastianich, Joe Bastianich and Mario Batali at Eataly, the Aragone (2006) from La Mozza in Maremma does not try or want to be a Super Tuscan. It aims for Mediterranean elegance as a good Rhone wine would and succeeds. This red blend uses the following varietals: 40% Sangiovese, 25% Alicante, 25% Syrah, 10% Carignan. 9000 bottles produced.
Neither king nor birds of prey were in attendance. I did enjoy the Vultur (2006) from Cantina Terra Dei Re in Basilicata, 100% Aglianico del Vulture…Good structure, rich flavors…
Next is the Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG (2006) from Cantina Novelli in Umbria, nice nose, good tannins, 100% Sagrantino.
Last, for good luck, the 7 Camicie Brunello di Montalcino (2004), 100% Sangiovese Rosso, a serious wine with a nice storyline. 7 Camicie stands for 7 Shirts which is considered a good luck charm for newborns.
Try some of them, try them all, feel free to disagree with me.
I will not take it personally.
