Breaking my mostly red wine mold, I finally got around a couple weeks ago to tasting or rather trying some food pairings with South African whites.
Amongst them was Sutherland Sauvignon Blanc (2008) from vineyards on the hills of Elgin which benefits from cooling effect of nearby sea.
In her Review of 2005 Vintage (June 2006), Jancis Robinson notes that the Elgin area is apple growing country and gets its cooler climes from "icy currents straight from Antarctic."
Fruit forward, good minerality, dry finish. East Coast Duxbury Oysters proved to be good enough company for this Sutherland Sauvignon Blanc…
This wine is produced by Thelema Mountain Vineyards. Their new releases include a Sutherland Viognier-Roussanne (2009) which I will have to try.
Thanks to Molly at Cape Classics for sharing this wine with me.
