The only Underground Restaurant listed in directory of Supper Club (Harper Collins UK, 2011) is in China.
Melinda Joe, a Louisiana born Chinese -American currently living in Tokyo who you might know for her writing on Tokyo through the Drinking Glass decided the time was ripe to get cooking for paying guests.
She shares how Gochiso came to life from idea on paper to their first event named 'Make yourself at home' in Gochiso Sama Desu (July 5).
Melinda describes Gochiso as an upscale pop up when it is really a Supper Club, Underground or Speakeasy restaurant.
She considers the dish described (and pictured) below as the highlight of the evening:
"Fluffy foie gras and avocado terrine drizzled with cocoa sauce and dotted with fresh apple vinaigrette. The acidity of the vinaigrette matched the brightness of the Rudd Mt. Veder Sauvignon Blanc ’09 that we served with it."
The evening's menu was created by Maria Suzuki.
It was definitely upscale as price per person was $135.
Each Gochiso dinner will spotlight up and coming local talent.
Melinda offers a play by play report on Gochiso's first evening in Tokyo Tidbits: The Birth of Gochiso, An Upscale Pop-Up (July 12, Umamimart).
