Follow the light with architect Tadao Ando Light and Space portfolio book in collaboration with photographer Richard Pare, with an introduction by Dominique Perrault (published in April 2025, ©Phaidon). The book covers a selection of 28 projects in Japan, France, Mexico and the US.
This guiding principle is spelled out by Tadao Ando in the opening pages of the book:
“Over half a century ago, I found myself standing before a congregation attending mass at Le Corbusier’s Notre Dame du Haut. I witnessed people standing shoulder to shoulder, showered in an intense ray of light from above. It was a sublime yet gentle light that embraced the praying souls. I knew then that this was the scenery of hearts I had been striving for and that architecture could be realized solely through aspiration toward the light.
My quest for light continues to this day-an architectural journey Richard Pare has recorded in its entirety. I know of no other photographer who captures architecture with such intelligence, sensitivity, and affection. I marvel at the persistence of his passion and fresh sensibility, which have not waned in the slightest over the decades. I consider my encounter with him one of the most fortunate events in my life.“
