Darn, since my flying carpet is in the shop, I will not make it to the private view and book launch for the exhibit Naoko Yogo: GRANADA at Chelsea Futurespace in London, Wednesday evening.
Looking at the image above that I received with the invite makes me feel like I am about to land on another planet, hostile or just harsh.
Program notes enlighten us a bit on the genesis of the show:
unseen black and white photographs. After the shooting of each frame in
some 40 rolls of film the artist herself never saw those images again
and the prints have been processed and developed posthumously. In
'Granada' Yogo looks at the landscape of rural southernSpainfrom a
specific viewpoint. That view is wholly isolated but yet not lonely and
the landscape itself objectified, almost abstracted, through a
consideration of scale and the choice of the monochromatic. Seeing from
the perspective of hindsight Yogo's photographs are now as much an
eulogy on memory and on loss as was Roland Barthes' text on
photography, 'Camera Lucida'."
I don't know if there will be another occasion to quote philosopher Roland Barthes in these columns.
Naoko Yogo (1971-2005) is a complete unknown to me.
I did find out via the web that she was making a living by doing a lot of English to Japanese translations.
Getting back to the program here is more background information about the her:
studied Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art & Design completing her
studies in 1998. While a student her work was concerned with the
three-dimensional, yet her preferred medium of expression always
remained photographic. Yogo traveled alone with her camera and what
she offers the viewer through her images is as much about contemplative
reflection on the self and one's own internal spaces as about the
topographical and the lyricism of place."
In a way she's coming back home with this show as Chelsea Space is part of the Chelsea College of Art & Design.
The show opens to the general public on December 3rd and runs until January 31, 2010.
Chelsea Futurespace is open 7 days a week from 11:00 AM to 6: 00 PM.
I am not sure if there is an admission fee.
Check with them.
