The program notes for Making the Everyday Exceptional with Harumi Kurihara, Daisy Martinez & Karen Bussen describe Harumi Kurihara as Japan's Domestic Goddess.
I have to take their word for it.
Even though it brings to mind Martha Stewart which tends to make me cringe.
When I originally checked the program I believe it featured only our Japanese star.
The addition of Daisy Martinez & Karen Bussen might make the event more palatable to US centric Foodies.
Actually Hirono aka The Hungry Gal in My Favorite Home Cook Next Door: Harumi Kurihara (Time for Dinner, August 2008) describes her underdog status in the US well:
gone completely under the food-obsessed American media radar is Harumi Kurihara,
Japan’s version of the domestic diva, who has been inspiring millions
of Japanese home cooks with Martha Steward-like vim and vigor (and
equally impressive empire with appearances in numerous Japanese
television shows, 20-plus cookbooks and her own magazine … all while
staying out of jail) for over two decades, introducing them to fresh
and creative ways of turning ordinary, everyday ingredients into
innovative dishes. My favorite talent of Harumi is her incredible
ability to resurrect the often unwanted leftover food into a stunning
new dish."
In our Consumed to Thrifty times who does not like leftovers.
We used the remnants of a whole chicken to make Chicken Noodle Soup last night and my youngest one found it better than the one from Whole Foods.
Getting back to the topic at hand, Harumi Kurihara gave that rare English interview to Global Atlanta (video below)
As far as I know, her latest English language cookbook is Harumi's Japanese Home Cooking, Simple, Elegant Recipes for Contemporary Tastes (Penguin, 2007, Cover Below).
Want to see up close and personal what Harumi has to offer, Make Everyday Exceptional takes place at the Japan Society on September 24, 2009 at 6:30pm.
