Moving is often stressful and always a lot of work. I should know since I have moved numerous times in my 18 years in the US.
I am doing it again this week (tomorrow actually) and it got me sorting out the clutter that we all accumulate in our life.
To start with as yesterday was ‘bulk day’ in my town, we threw out some of our furniture which was showing its age.
Another thing I had to sift through was the various magazines that I collected over the past few years.
Unused clothing will be donated as well as older computer games and programs, some videos.
As we shrink the size of our belongings, it makes the move more manageable.
The most time consuming part might be the file clearing (you know this never ending torrent of medical, insurance and other bills)…I don’t think that step will be accomplished until after the move or rather my return from South By Southwest.
I found some useful advice in What to pack, what to leave (Yellowpages.com), Declutter by throwing away, selling or giving away stuff (43 Things), Give something away and declutter your life (a Year of Living Generously, UK).
Lucy Kellaway offers her take on moving or rather changing office in My past is in the dustbin (Financial Times…Full piece requires registration).
On a positive note, I am only moving across town and to bigger and better digs so I should not whine…and God created storage places!
Forgive me if my writing gets spotty over the next couple of days and feel free to add your words of advice.
