In the heart of the Causses (Minervois), the village of Aigne is built with a snail like center. Since its origins go as far back as the first century, it must have been a way to protect itself from invaders. The romans were there in the mid 100’s. For the past few centuries the village has found a quiet prosperity with olive trees and vineyards.
Anne and Thierry Bonnel delivers one of the local wines with their Domaine ‘Sainte Leocadie’ (Minervois) ‘Les Clauses’ (2003). Made of 50% Syrah, 25% Grenache, 25% Carignan, it offers enough body to complement a hearty meal with good fruit and earthy spices.
The village of Aigne also offers for your stay a number of Gites and artists call it home.
As you found out by now I am sure the Aigne website is only in French.
If you look for a low key alternative to Sting’s Il Palagio, this might be a good spot to spend time in the slow lane.
