From Buenos Aires, Tango Teacher and California Expat, Cherie Magnus shares her mixed feelings and some details on the event in Dancing in the Streets (Tangocherie, December 2).
She states that it is taking place on December 6 in 2008 when most other sites point to December 11.
Can someone clarify the facts for me.
The holiday also marks the birthday of Carlos Gardel.
It was first celebrated in 1977 according to the Dia del Tango Festival site (in Sofia, Bulgaria)
More unusual holidays celebrated in Argentina are "Train Tracks day (Dia del Riel, 18th July) and Day of the Noodle Maker (Dia del Obrero Fideero, 22nd May)" I learned from Everyday should be a holiday (on Buenos Aires Argentina Guide)…
I included Argentina's Travel Guide in my Around the World in 10 Blogs list on Blogs.com
Will you put on your dancing shoes this Saturday?
Hi Serge,
Sorry for the confusion–National Tango Day is actually Dec. 11, but it will be celebrated today, Dec. 6, here in Buenos Aires. In other provinces there may be celebrations on the 11th.
It’s the 11th because of being Gardel’s and De Caro’s birthdays. But since it’s a tourist event, maybe it’s a “moveable feast” as Saturday is a more popular night.
