Thursdays is Tokyo Thursdays and this week also happens to be Blog Action Day 09 with Climate Change on the Menu.
Even though I already wrote about how Laying Off the Beef could have a serious impact, I thought I should look at what Japan had to offer.
initiatives.
Trends in Japan shares some of these efforts in Eco-Friendly Air-Conditioned Beds and Clothes (October 8).
Let's talk beds only. Combine a mat and a fan and they suggest you can say goodbye to sleepless nights:
that allows air to flow from the head end to the foot end; a fan fitted
at the foot end of the mat draws a steady stream of air into the head
end and out of the foot end. Like in the air-conditioned clothes, the
air flow promotes the evaporation of sweat, producing a cooling effect.
Even using one of the mats for eight hours a day consumes considerably
less electricity than a room air-conditioner"
The picture below by Web Japan (from their piece) gives you an idea of what it looks like and how it works.
Since cutting down on electricity use is a good way to reduce greenhouse gases, this bedding is a great practical way to do so.
Eartheasy in Climate Change: What we can do about it quotes the following statistics:
and, on hot summer days, consume 43% of the U.S. peak power load."
Not sure what the numbers are in Japan but I'm sure they are pretty high as well.
Cool tips for Tokyo Thursdays # 109 on Blog Action Day 09.
Oh wow! This is nice! Where can we order this kind of bed? I’d like to have one… Thanks! Let me share you my thoughts about the matter – In the grocery store nearby our house, they will give you an option to purchase their “save the earth” green colored cloth bag and that’s where they will place your purchased products. And then every time you buy anything from the store and you bring the “save the earth” bag with you, you get to have discounts. This is their way of sharing their contribution to save the earth from global warming. To solve this problem, it must be stormed at the national and international levels. But the total success is built upon the action of every individual, regardless of nationality, to conserve energy and live in a greener, cleaner community. Let’s be united to make this world a better place. Happy BLoG AcTioN DaY! 🙂

I agree that change cannot be mandated only, we all have a chance to chip in…
I will experiment with that starting tomorrow, October 18 during ‘No Impact Week’
