Anyone bored with Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc could do worse than looking at other whites from Southern European countries made with native grapes.
I found a few of them (all from 2009 vintage) at the Wines of Portugal Grand Tasting on April 1st.
Let's start with the Evel Branco (DOC Douro) by Real Companhia Velha, a blend of Viosinho, Moscatel, Gouveio, good acidity, nice finish, moscatel adds mellow tones.
Next the Cister de Ribeira Branco (DOC Douro) from Quinta de Ventozelo also with Moscatel and Viosinho, third grape is the not so common Rabigato, close in style to the Evel Branco.
Also worth mentioning is the Esporao Verdelho (VR Alentejano) by Herdade do Esporao all Verdelho, crisp and citrusy.
All these wines are in the $9 to $15 range so they're worth taking a chance on.
I will offer another batch of whites from the same tasting in the coming days.
Great post!
I do absolutely agree that Portuguese wines are much, much better than many people think. And, as you show, they’re very reasonably priced!

Besides the good prices, I think Portuguese wines offer different flavors and unfamiliar varietals which is part of their charm.
